Existing stairs had some work done when the bedroom the door to the stairwell was renovated after being stripped down to the studs. They decided to drywall the studs on the attic stairwell side too and no one seems to remember is there were handrails before the job was done. Handrails required? yes or no

yes, i see no exception for an attic stair to lack handrail, and the attic if it has a floor should have proper gaurds
