Working on a project in Kansas under IBC 2003 and NFPA 101 2000. Are there any requirements in IBC or NFPA 101 to stencil letters above a finish ceiling "FIRE OR SMOKE PARTITION - PROTECT ALL OPENINGS". Seems like it use to be a requirement long ago......

SECTION 716

DUCTS AND AIR TRANSFER OPENINGS

716.4 Access and identification. Fire and smoke dampers shall be provided with an approved means of access, large enough to permit inspection and maintenance of the damper and its operating parts. The access shall not affect the integrity of fire-resistance-rated assemblies. The access openings shall not reduce the fire-resistance rating of the assembly. Access points shall be permanently identified on the exterior by a label having letters not less than 0.5 inch (12.7 mm) in height reading: SMOKE DAMPER or FIRE DAMPER. Access doors in ducts shall be tight fitting and suitable for the required duct construction.

I thought it was still in the Code also. The above is what I found about ID'ing the rated condition. I still use the old SBC requirements in my spec's for any interior rated walls on my projects. It just make good sense to advise those who come after the job is construction about rated walls especially when they are above the ceilings to run cable, telecommuncations etc.

There is a requirement in the 2009 IBC
haha yeah I just took the 2009 update. There is a sign required for everything!! Signs for yard hydrants.. signs to find the accessible means of egress if you in the normal path of egress.. signs, signs, everywhere signs!

signs, signs, everywhere there're signs. . . blocking up the scenery, breakin' my mind. . . do this don't do that! can't you read the si-igns?!
