I have a Type II-A, 2 story bldg., 35,000+ sq. ft. total for the entire bldg., fully sprinkled throughout., Type

A-3 occupancy with a single planned elevator in it. The Fire Dept. here tells me that they WILL have fire service

utilizing this lone elevator, per Section 3003.2 in the `06 IBC.

Question: Is a sump pit 'required' in an elevator pit by the ICC codes? In referring to the Ch. 35 of the `06 IBC

[ the referenced standards ], ASME 17.1 - the Safety code For Elevators And Escalators, with a 2004 addenda and

an A17.1S Supplement, Section 2.2.2 requires an approved drain or sump pump installed whenever fire services

are used.

Anyone care to weigh in on this? Thanks!

Re: Sump Pits

If your jurisdiction has adopted the 2007 version of the Elevator code, a 50 gpm sump pump is required for each car. This was a major change in the 2007. Earlier editions required the sump, but no pump.

Re: Sump Pits

Coug Dad ( and others ),

Our jurisdiction has not adopted any elevator code! I am wondering if we can require the sump pit or

an approved type of drainage design by referring to Section 3001.2 - the in the `06 IBC, or would we have

had to specifically adopted the ASME 17.1 latest edition?

Re: Sump Pits

See what your state has adopted with regards to elevators. Sometimes they are ahead of the building codes for adopting newer versions.
