I have a situation where I have two 460V AC units on a pad with 40" separation between them. So my question is about 'Condition 3'. What constitutes 'exposed live parts'? Both covers would have to be open for this condition to exist. I would say that this falls under condition 2, although the clearance doesn't meet that requirement either.

Thank you.

I would say that you have conditions 3 as you have the potential for exposed live parts on both sides.

Condition 2 would be live parts on one side and a grounded surface such as concrete, brick or tile walls on the other side.

I have always been of this opinion also, but as I was getting ready to fire off a RFI today I realized it is not clearly defined in the NEC.
