ALSC Board Minutes Regarding Lumber Testing Released

ALSC Board of Review

July 31, 2012

The American Lumber Standards Committee (ALSC) Board of Review released the minutes from their meeting on July 19, 2012. Click on the pdf link below to view the full minutes, some highlights include:

Regarding SPIB's full matrix testing of Southern Pine: "Mr. Searles stated that SPIB had completed its sampling and testing program for all sizes and grades of southern pine dimension lumber needed to complete the matrix necessary to assign design values. He noted that the preliminary data of this testing program was being reviewed by the SPIB Technical Committee which was meeting on July 18 and 19, 2012 in Pensacola, FL and that the SPIB Board of Governors will meet on August 30 and 31, 2012 to consider the data and recommendations of the Technical Committee. He stated that the Board had not received any specific data from SPIB pertaining to the analysis of the full matrix data, but it was his understanding the values trended lower than the present values for southern pine but the reductions were not as great as those for No. 2 2x4.

Procedurally, the Board of Review expects to receive the full matrix data and any recommended design value adjustments immediately after the SPIB Board of Governors has voted in August. He stated the Board would forward the SPIB submission to the Forest Products Laboratory, the technical advisor of the Board, for its review and that the Board would consider the item at its October 18, 2012 meeting."

Regarding the sampling and testing plan for Doug Fir-Larch and Hem-Fir: "Dr. Cheung stated that the sampling and testing of Douglas Fir-Larch being conducted by Pacific Lumber Inspection Bureau (PLIB), Redwood Inspection Service (RIS), Timber Products Inspection (TP), West Coast Lumber Inspection Bureau (WCLIB) and Western Wood Products Association (WWPA) has been completed. He indicated the agencies were analyzing the data and anticipated the results of the analysis would be submitted to the Board for consideration at the October 2012 Board meeting. The Board noted that when received the data would be made public and forwarded to the FPL for review.

It was noted that the agencies involved with the testing of western species would sample and test the SPF(S) species grouping before sampling and testing the Hem-Fir species grouping."

Regarding the sampling and testing plan for SPF-S: "Dr. Cheung and Mr. Caron addressed the SPF-S sampling and testing being conducted by Pacific Lumber Inspection Bureau (PLIB), Redwood Inspection Service (RIS), Timber Products Inspection (TP), West Coast Lumber Inspection Bureau (WCLIB) and Western Wood Products Association (WWPA), Northern Softwood Lumber Bureau (NSLB), Quebec Forest Industry Council (QFIC), Maritime Lumber Bureau (MLB) and Northeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association (NeLMA).

It was noted that the SPF(S) species group growth range was from the west coast to the northeast coast of the US and that three distinct regions of the US were involved in the testing—the lake states, the northeast states and the western states. Mr. Caron stated the sampling of the lake states species had been completed and testing would begin next month at the University of Minnesota-Duluth laboratory. He noted that testing of the northeast states species had been completed. Dr. Cheung stated that sampling of the western state species had begun. It was anticipated the results of these tests would be available in February 2013."
