So you run into those obscure codes

Well this was on I dig hardware

2018 IBC

1010.1.9.6.1Closet doors.
Closet doors that latch in the closed position shall be openable from inside the closet.

2015 it applied only to R-4

Guess the closet people did some heavy lobbying.
 
This is one of those code sections that should have never needed to be adopted. Any room that you can enter becomes an occupied space and therefore the door leading from that occupied space is part of the means of egress and shall be openable from the egress side.

1008.1.9.5.1 Closet and bathroom doors in Group R-4 occupancies.
In Group R-4 occupancies, closet doors that latch in the closed position shall be openable from inside the closet, and bathroom doors that latch in the closed position shall be capable of being unlocked from the ingress side.
 
What if it is not a closet? What if it is a coat hole?....Totally agree that this did not need to be addressed....Because it already was...
