I found a family of cats living in the ducts in home I did a final on once.

This is not residential, it is still one of my favorites. It is an overhead duct and the squirell is stuck to the access door hanging down. Even if it weren't for the squirrel, the inside of the duct is filthy. Note where the tail flapping in the breeze has swept a small part clean.

I saw a floor joist running through a return the other day but I couldn't find a code section or other justification to turn them down.
