Time delay egress doors?

I was reading a thread at ET about the Movie Theater Shooting and the following came up. Never heard of this. Comments and code sections???

Many stores have alarms on doors, even delayed egress ( door locked for 20 seconds after you push the panic bar)But all of that is optional and has to do with preventing theft.

I believe the rules are in the building codes, not the NFPA.

not sure the question

yes you can have delayed egress, except a,e,h

if the colorado theater the person used to exit and came back in had a delay, it should have made some noise the first time he opened it.

I was thinking about this too. Delayed egress locks would not be allowed on theater emergency exits by the IBC, but they would per 101. If the doors did have delayed egress locks, the alarm would have sounded when he propped the door open, but I think a local alarm without delay would serve the purpose for a theater exit and there are no occupancy limitations for alarmed devices. 15 seconds probably wouldn't be long enough for theater personnel to get to the door anyway. I'm kind of surprised theaters don't typically have alarmed exits, just to keep people from buying one ticket and then letting in their friends for free.

Here's some light reading about delayed egress: http://idighardware.com/2011/11/delayed-egress-hardware-code-comparison-2/

Great points Lori.

As CDA points out there is often early misinformation circulated. I'm going to wait a while before really mining information about this senseless event.

I don't think that the delayed egress locks would have had an affect on preventing the attack.

I do think that an alarmed exit may have changed the plan of attack...... instead of the attack taking place in the theater's movie viewing area, it may have changed to the lobby area where people were waiting to get in to view the movie.

One thing that I have noticed about armchair quarterbacking........ people get to hung up on how to prevent the act but forget to look at the real issues or the whole picture.

Some of the issues that need to be visiting (IMHO)

Mental Health

Gun Ownership (Not for elimination of guns, but restrictions for ownership for certain types of weapons ---- do you really need an assault rifle for Bambi?)

Security

Changing of young kids behavior thru video gaming..... Columbine was blamed on Doom , What are they going to blame this attack on.

Parenting --- (Maybe classes on what is required as a parent beyond the act of having kids, eh?)

etc.

All I know, when I was growing up we had one Sheriff and one deputy (Almost Mayberry Like) .....

I only remember one person being killed and the community opinion was that person deserved it...especially since he was trying to break into Mr. Smith’s house (Not the real name,)

Fights at school were resolved at school .. Teachers didn't try to break it up until the kids had figured out who was king....Guns and knives were not at the school,

We learned that pellet guns hurt when you were hit by a BB or a pellet,

And I knew if I misbehaved at my friends house, I would get a spanking there, then another one when I got home - So I learned to misbehave at home :P

I agree BB....same as me.

Speaking of senseless, the first lawsuit was annouced this morning. A non-injured patron is suffering from "extreme trauma" and will be suing the theater for not having a guarded or alarmed exit, the shooters Dr.'s for failing to monitor the meds the shooter was on, and the best? He is suing the film maker for creating and realising such a violent movie, even though he was also at the movie. Give me a break. I told the wife it wouldn't take long for the scum to rise, I was right.

OK, sorry for the thread hijack.......off my soapbox.

This has led to the desensitization of our society, which has increased events like this as the line from reality has become more blurred than ever.
