Still trying to make sense of this one. Directional flow, reason, was the plumber drunk? I have no idea

Wait a minute....it's a wet vent, see, the water will; once connected go up the dry vent then it turns around and goes thru the trap and then down the stack. In all seriousness, I am still speechless......
 
It's for the zombie apocalypse!......you can fill your tub (with fresh water)and when the sewer fails and backs up, it won't want to go up into the tub......or not...

That couldn't be done by a plumber , looks like homeowner stuff. All that mess could be 2 fittings after the tub trap
