Section 802.2 of the 2006 IPC requires that any indirect waste piping that exceeds 2' in developed length measured horizontally or 4' in total developed length to be trapped.

Can anyone explain the rationale behind this requirement?

Thanks in advance,

GPE

The `03 IPC Commentary says: it is to minimize the bacterial growthand odor in the indirect waste piping.....The trap requirement is

intended to apply only to fixtures or devices that are open

ended.

I don't see how a trap can minimize bacterial growth or odors. Maybe I'm missing something here...GPE
I'm with you. I worked in the dairy business for a lot of years. We were taught that any standing water will breed bacteria in a matter of hours. Therefore, everything was required to drain completely after cleaning, flushing, etc. Seems to me that the same principles would appy here.
