Ttransfer switch in a exterior stairwell enclosure

2 story, Type 3B office building, non sprinkled. Cliant wants to locate the transfer switch to a new generator install in one the exterior exit enclosures of his building. Would this cross the line of using this stairway for any pourpose than as an exit. What say you.

is this going to be inside the exit enclosure, or mounted on the outside of the building, on an exterior wall, enclsong the exit stair. if its outside, probably ok, if its inside the stairs, no go

IMHO - It would be crossing the line..... because the penetrations into the stairway do not directly serve the stair way.

707.8 Penetrations. Penetrations in a shaft enclosure shall be

protected in accordance with Section 712 as required for fire

barriers.

707.8.1 Prohibited penetrations. Penetrations other than

those necessary for the purpose of the shaft shall not be permitted

in shaft enclosures.
