Can combustible shelving be used in type IIB Construction? The "food pantry" wants to construct a room inside the City owned recreation center and use it for the local food pantry. They would like to build combustible shelving to store the food items on. The building is fully sprinkled.

Shelving and cabinets are generally considered to be "furnishings" and not part of the structure of the building. If they are free-standing you should be OK with combustible material. If they are built-in then you need to be careful about the code's requirements for concealed combustible spaces and design accordingly.

I think that since one can install backing for cabinets and other millwork, then the cabinets and other shelving would be allowed to be wood. Just be sure they do not allow for storage to within 18" of ceilings.

The shelving can be combustible but the room must be constructed with noncombustible construction.

Also- Make sure the shelving doesn't exceed 30" in depth.....or else it becomes racking, and a whole 'nother set of issues may arise out of NFPA 13.

Thanks for all of your comments. I posted this same question on the "other bulletin board" and only recieved one comment in six days (thanks Gene). I think I will stick with this board.
