Unisex Restrooms & Min Fixtures

I'm designing a proposal for an F-2 PE Metal bld with office lean-to in Kentucky.

Kentucky has not adopted IPC and has its own plumbing code with minimum fixture requirements based on occupancy and corresponding load. The occupant load is divided equally among men and women.

The client wants two unisex restrooms in the office area. How does this factor with min fixtures?

Will the number of fixtures "count" for each sex?

Thanks for any and all help.

New in 2012 IPC clarification gives what your client wants:

403.2.1 Family or assisted-use toilet facilities serving as separate facilities.

Where a building or tenant space requires a separate toilet facility for each sex and each toilet facility is required to have only one water closet, two family/assisted-use toilet facilities shall be permitted to serve as the required separate facilities. Family or assisted- use toilet facilities shall not be required to be identified for exclusive use by either sex as required by :Next('./icod_ipc_2012_4_par020.htm')'>Section 403.4.

north star, I don't know.

A cursory look of the Kentucky codes are based on the 2006 I-codes.

Aside from the plumbing count there are probably accessibility requirements in their IBC Chapter 11; the proposal may give the AHJ consideration for 2 “unisex” instead of required separate sex accessible restrooms.

I’ve provided bharvey with a reference to make his client’s case.

Would you allow it under the 2006 edition?

Francis,

In the interest of intent of providing adequate accomodations

to the users, ..."yes", I would [ probably ] allow it.
