Use of open mail slots in a corridor

A client wants to use open mail slots in a corridor (ie no doors on the individual slots) and I cannot find where the Code specifically addresses this. It is not "finish" and would not be limited by flame spread and it would not be specifically addressed by the requirements such as in Group E which limits the artwork of children on the surface of a corridor wall.

The projection of the slots into the corridor width does not reduce the corridor width to less that the required width and the installation may not violate the limits of protruding objects but could if greater than 4" into the corridor.

As the total surface of corridor walls on the floor covered by the bank of mail slots is less than 10% of the total wall surface, can anyone suggest where the Code would specifically permit or not permit this use?

Mail slots are openings, and if the corridor is required to have a fire-protection rating, then the slots will need to have protection, too.

So they are surface mounted mail boxes which do not project more than 4" in the height range of 27" to 80"? What material are the boxes maid out of; metal or wood? Are they mounted so the slots is within the accessible reach ranges? Is the mail door to retreive the mail located within the reach range? When did the POST OFFICE start delivering mail to individual office doors again down a corridor? Questions and more questions.

the cabinet of the slots is wood, will not project into required clear width of corridor, will not have "doors" or other closure, will not penetrate wall (surface mounted), will be open slots for use by building mail department to distribute mail to floor for convenience, mail will be open to the corridor atmosphere.

Client will submit to Fire Marshal for review (and confusion).

Building is fully sprinkler protected, office building.

I have given client go ahead unless onr of you thinks there is a real problem.
