Need to know about the new state and federal building codes coming into effect?

Check out a series of classes being offered in Vacaville in January and February.

The California Building Officials Training Institute will offer five courses, each including continuing education units, at Ulatis Community Center. They include:

* California Residential Code: Full-day class on Jan. 25 examines critical concepts of the building provisions located in the 2010 CRC. It provides a basis for the correct use and application of the code and builds on an understanding of the intent of the code through practice with real-world examples. This course will also explore the California-specific amendments of the CRC and will highlight the needed information every building department in California will need to know to begin enforcing the CRC. Upon completion, participants will be better able to explain the intent behind the building provisions requirements, locate general topics and applicable tables, define terms essential for correct code interpretation and identify the code that relates to specific building provisions.

This course is applicable for all building inspectors, plans examiners, building officials, fire officials, designers and contractors.

* 2010 ADA Accessibility: Full-day class on Jan. 26 introduces the latest of the accessibility standards to be adopted for use in the U.S. Although its mandatory use will not be required until January 2012, it may be used locally, if adopted.

These standards contain new provisions for currently mandated accessibility requirements that will require greater levels of accessibility than the current California Building Standards and the ADA of 1990 contain. This course is recommended for building officials, designers, plans examiners, field inspectors and is a must for all certified access specialists.

* California Building Code: In addition to highlighting the changes between the 2007 and 2010 California Building Code, this full-day course on Feb. 1 will examine selected sections that have shown a tendency for misapplications. This course is designed to provide guidance and clarity on selected applications of the CBC, for the experienced user of the code. This course is recommended for building officials, designers, plans examiners, field inspectors and counter technicians.

* California Green Building Code Update (CalGreen): This half-day course on Feb. 2 introduces the recently adopted 2010 California Green Building Standards Code, now Part 11 of CCR Title 24, which will become effective on January 1.

* California Plumbing & Mechanical Code Updates: This half-day course on Feb. 2 will provide information on the most critical changes occurring with the 2010 California Plumbing and Mechanical Codes. It is intended for plan reviewers, inspectors, designers and contractors doing work in residential and commercial construction. Participants who have them should bring a copy of the 2010 California Plumbing Code and the 2010 California Mechanical Code to the course.
