Question: do vehicle barriers need to be continuous across the entire end of a parking stall?
I'm retrofitting an existing 2nd story parking garage which used to be used for car dealership storage, but now will be used by the public, serving the retail space below. The outer perimeter of the elevated garage is a pedestrian walkway aisle, with guardrails rated for pedestrian loads. There currently are no vehicle barriers.
We're going to add the vehicle barriers per CBC/IBC 406.2.4. The best place for us to add them (structurally speaking) is at the end of the parking stall where it adjoins the pedestrian aisle, however, we'd like put a break at each stall so that the pedestrians can walk past the vehicle barrier to get to their car.
For example, if a normal parking stall is 9' wide, we'd like to make the vehicle barrier only 7' wide, centered on the stall. This would leave 4' between adjacent stalls with no vehicle barrier.
Do you see any problem with this?
