The delay in the release of the 2024 International Residential Code (IRC) by the International Code Council (ICC) can be attributed to the comprehensive and meticulous process involved in updating and finalizing building codes. This process encompasses a thorough review, discussion, and modification of a wide array of proposals submitted by industry experts and stakeholders. These proposals cover diverse aspects of residential construction and require extensive scrutiny to ensure they meet current safety standards and reflect the latest advancements in building science.

For instance, detailed attention is given to proposals on materials, such as sheathing types, which undergo rigorous scrutiny, including public comment periods. This not only extends the timeline for finalizing the code but also ensures that the modifications incorporated are well-considered and comprehensive.

Moreover, the 2024 IRC is introducing several new provisions, such as those for sleeping lofts, accessory dwelling units (ADUs), updates to vapor retarders, and guidelines for exterior guards on decks. The integration of these detailed and nuanced changes necessitates careful deliberation. It's a process aimed at balancing innovation in building practices with the safety and well-being of occupants.

The ICC's process for code development is extensive, involving solicitation, review, and incorporation of changes proposed by various contributors in the building industry. This ensures that the IRC remains a dynamic document, evolving to address new challenges and technologies in residential construction.

For the latest updates and more detailed information directly from the ICC, you can refer to their website, particularly the sections dedicated to the 2024 International Codes. This includes the International Residential Code, where updates and news related to code development and updates are available.

These references offer a comprehensive view of the factors contributing to the delay in the release of the 2024 IRC and provide insight into the ongoing process of updating and finalizing the code.

The main reason for the delay is the energy provisions. The IRC cannot be completed until the IECC is finalized.

Still on 2018 codes here. State has not said when we will move to the 2021 codes. I will probably not be around by the time we get the 2024 codes.
