Does section r308.4.6 of the NY Residential Code require that a window within the 24" arc of the door swing be safety glazing or does this refer to sidelights on doors as it refers to fixed or operable panels?

Hi Willy,

Such a window if within 60" of the floor must be safety glazing. This is irrespective of whether it's a fixed or operable panel or sash.

The fixed or operable panels could exist in a window as well as in a door. This requirement should be interpreted literally meaning that the door is just the door slab not the jamb or any part of the door trim. The "nearest vertical edge" is meant to refer to the first exposed edge of glass not the nearest part of the window frame.

6. Glazing, in an individual fixed or operable panel adjacent to a door where the nearest vertical edge is within a 24-inch (610 mm) arc of the door in a closed position and whose bottom edge is less than 60 inches (1524 mm) above the floor or walking surface.

welcome aboard jwilly! Always nice to have another NYer!

That 24" rule is from both edges of the door, so any glass within 24" of the doorknob and any within 24" of the hinges will need to be safety glazing.

You may have already known that, but figured I'd throw it in.. just in case :)
