Out of curiosity and at the risk of being laughed at, I'm going to post a question that someone mentioned to me today. How do you apply the IBC's egress requirements to zoo enclosures? Obviously you can't provide free egress from the gorilla cage, so how you address this? I'm talking about the zookeeper-only areas, not the public areas.

I think it would be reasonable to apply the same criteria and provisions for an "I" occupancy. Treat it like a prison or mental institution.

Just my $0.02

Off hand i'm not sure, but I'll take a look around this place and see what's been provided. I'll get bck to you later, it's feeding time.

This is a good one. I emailed the guy responsible for building the "Hippo House."

IBC may not apply in every situation that is built: http://www.1001moviescenes.com/scenes/7049/
I once worked on a lab project that had special locking requirements because whatever they were doing in this particular room was so dangerous that if someone outside of the room saw the guy inside incapacitated, they didn't want anyone to be able to open the door to try to help. Yikes!

I would say the animal enclosure itself an ahj might look at alternatives

And not go strictly by the code
