My firm is looking into converting an old motel into studio apartments for formerly homeless citizens in our community. We will be retrofitting kitchenettes into each room, and given the location of the existing plumbing, it is quite possible that when you open the unit entry door and step into the "foyer", the bathroom door is immediately to your right, and the strip kitchenette is immediately to your left, as in Unit type B below.

Question: I seem to recall in the old UBC there was a prohibition against bathrooms opening "into" kitchens. Is that still the case?

Not into potties

Are you thinking restaurant kitchen???

Otherwise you could never have a studio apartment, unless there was a minimum distance of seperation

I think you are looking for IBC 2902.3.2.
I would say you are ok as far as code is concerned

IBC 1210.4 Toilet room location. Toilet rooms shall not open directly into a room used for the preparation of food for service to the public.

So... don't let the public in!

Inspected many houses with bedrooms leading into a kitchen. They are ok. My problem was always where to put the smoke alarm that is required to be outside of the bedroom.
This might be a problem for you too.
