Apartment Doors

So say brand new apartments.

No corridors involved.

Direct access to outside or access to stairs.

Do the doors have to be self closing? Code section......

If self closing, do they have to be rated?? Code section.....

Not required to be self-closing since they are not part of a rated assembly, and, since they are not part of a rated assembly, the doors are not required to be rated.

Would think self-closing would make a lot of sense to keep the "bugs" out and the pets in "duh"!
 
I believe the code requires a deadbolt for security. Maybe a peep hole and some cities require a metal plate on the strike side. Not aware of a required closer except on residential from a garage to the house.

If there are no corridors involved or egress balconies with dead ends, there is no requirement to rate the exterior wall or the doors (or any openings) located in them. That it'll "make a lot of sense" is not a code requirement.
 
Yes "but" what about habitability requirements (health & safety codes) to prevent intrusion of vermin?
 
IPMC 304.14 requires screens. It also sez every screen door used you insect control shall have a SELF-Closing devise in good working condition. Wonder if a big "ol" spring will suffice.


And what is this rusty, dusty, dirty-looking thing that's covering your window? That's a screen!

A screen! It's a screen. And what are these really big things that are right in the middle of your view of the Sac-o-Suds and your kitchen window, what do we call these big things? Trees?

Trees, that's right. Don't be afraid, just shout 'em right out when you know 'em. And what are these thousands of little things that are on trees? Leaves?

And these big bushy things between the trees. Bushes?

Bushes. So, you can positively identify the defendants, for a moment of two seconds, looking through this dirty window, this crud-covered screen, all of these trees, with all of these leaves on them, and I don't know how many bushes.
 
We don't need doors to keep out uninvited guests. We don't need a wall along our border to keep out the Canadians and Visigoths and Spanish Inquisition.
