I’m planning to cover my existing patio by extending the roof of the house. It is a 12 x 14 area to be covered. My plan is to use 6x6 for posts and beams, and 2x6 rafters. For post footing, is 2’ depth acceptable?

See note #4 below and check with local AHJ

R301.2 Climatic and Geographic Design Criteria

Buildings shall be constructed in accordance with the provisions of this code as limited by the provisions of this section. Additional criteria shall be established by the local jurisdiction and set forth in Table R301.2(1).

For SI: 1 pound per square foot = 0.0479 kPa, 1 mile per hour = 0.447 m/s.

Notes:
  1. Weathering may require a higher strength concrete or grade of masonry than necessary to satisfy structural requirements of this code. The grade of masonry units shall be determined from ASTM C34, C55, C62, C73, C90, C129, C145, C216, or C625 listed in Chapter 43.
  2. The frost line depth may require deeper footings than indicated in Section R403.1.4. The jurisdiction shall fill in the frost line depth column with minimum depth of footing below finished grade.
  3. New Jersey is divided into two zones: Zone 1 consists of Monmouth and Burlington Counties and all counties to the south. Zone 2 consists of Mercer and Middlesex Counties and all counties to the north.
  4. The enforcing agency having jurisdiction may establish values other than the ones listed for "ground snow load," and "frost line depth" if warranted by documented local climatic and geographic conditions."

Minimum footing depths in NJ are 36" and in some areas 42"

Are you planning on doing this yourself?

You are going to need a full set of plans showing the footings design.
