Working on plans for an escape room business (A-3). Occupant load of 123 people.
II-B construction existing building, non sprinklered.
1-hr rated corridor is required.
I am located in NC so I will be making reference to NC Building Code (NCBC).

NCBC 1020 states rated corridors shall comply with Section 708 Fire partitions.

Section 708.9: Ducts and air transfer openings shall comply with Section 717.

I know I need fire dampers, but my question is related to smoke dampers:

Section 717.5.3.1 Corridors
3. Listed smoke damper designed to resist passage of smoke shall be provided at each point a duct penetrates a corridor enclosure "required to have smoke and draft control doors in accordance with Section 716.5.3"
(exceptions of this section do not apply to me in this case)

Section 716.5.3 Door assemblies in corridors and smoke barriers
Section 716.5.3.1 Smoke and draft control

I am needing some guidance on the last two sections. Does this section mean that all rated corridors (regardless of whether it is considered a smoke barrier or not) are required to have smoke and draft control or does this section only apply if the assembly is a "corridor and a smoke barrier".

Thanks!

I assume Section 717.5.3.1 is an NC amendment since it does not exist in the 2015 IBC.

Do not rely on the section headings as code--they are there to assist in finding applicable content. Read the content following the heading for applicability. If you read Section 716.5.3, you will notice it states "...corridor walls or smoke barrier walls..."

Section 716.5.3 and its subsections apply only to corridors and smoke barriers, and only to corridors when the doors require a 20-minute fire-protection rating (i.e., when the corridors are required to be fire rated per Table 1020.1).
