Emergency Exit Through Private Office

I just rented a building with the emergency exit in a private area. The Fire Marshall said that I will have to delineate the exit. The frog eye exit sign and lights are already installed on both doors. What else needs to be done in order to delineate the emergency exit?

As soon as I read "private office" I assumed the opposite. I assume the door WILL be locked, and that egress will be compromised.

No lock at all, not even a door knob. Just double swinging doors.

What does the code say? Do you have a link to the fire code highlighting what is needed? I would like to know if a Safety rail will be enough of a physical barrier, like the image attached.

It’s the admin area of a 1 story building, we are remodeling.

It looks like a warehouse or a stockroom. The thread title says "private office." It's not an office, and it doesn't appear to be private.

Regardless of how it looks, it’s a private office, employee only area. We are remodeling and the “employees only” sign is clearly on the door. What you are looking at is the future admin area that is being temporarily used as storage while we remodel the rest of the building. Regardless, the title and the request remains the same. Just looking for the rules regarding emergency egress through via a private area.

There is a difference between a private office and an employee-only area such as the stockroom in a Walmart. What you have is not a private office, it is a non-public use area. Unfortunately, although the term "private office" appears multiple times throughout the IBC, it is not defined in the IBC -- probably because it should be obvious what a "private office" is (an office occupied by one individual and subject to locking when not occupied).

Egress through intervening spaces is addressed in IBC section 1016.2.
