Should these be included in the maximum openings percentages in Table 705.8 or are they treated as ducts and air transfer openings per 705.10?
 
Its a mechanical device, isn't it? I would think it would be governed under the mechanical code.

In any case, PTACs don't actually transfer air through the wall. The "opening" is filled with a metal plate through which it transfers heat the same way an air conditioner does - using refrigerant lines.
 
I would say you don't get to 705.10 unless 705.8 is in play for protected openings...?

Agreed that 705.10 only applies in the very limited condition of an unsprinklered building with 3'-5' FSD. Why the code made the language so unnecesarily complicated, I don't know.

But do you count the PTAC area as part of the openings? I have not found a definition for "opening" as described in 705 but all of the language refers to only doors and windows.
