2024 Energy Electric Resistance Heat

We used to use electric baseboard a lot in basements....Not any more.....Brought to you by the heat pump folks....

N1103.7.1 (R403.7.1)Electric-resistance space heating.

Detached one- and two-family dwellings and townhouses in Climate Zones 4 through 8 using electric-resistance space heating shall limit the total installed heating capacity of all electric-resistance space heating serving the dwelling unit to not more than 2.0 kW or shall install a heat pump in the largest space that is not used as a bedroom.

Seems like a reasonable regulation to me. Spend a bit more up front, save money (and energy) in the long run.

So...$6000 for a heat pump when I want to heat my basement about 6 times a year and it last 10 years....As opposed to $200 for a piece of baseboard....That lasts forever....Portable heaters it is....

Eh, I don't agree with how you are presenting it. How about properly sizing the heat pump for the house so it can handle the basement? Maybe that is less than buying a new one just for the basement.
 
Nah...floor space, fire hazard, move it, store it....
You can get "portable" (plug-in) electric resistance heaters in a baseboard form factor. And you can still install 2 kW of hard-wired baseboard heaters for your 6 times a year usage.

Yep....way to write code that everyone will just find a work around for.....
 
I guess I don't think about it anymore. I always hated basements and the problems they cause and now I am in a 1A zone and don't have basements so it is a complete non-issue for me.

Yeah....discriminatory in that it only applies to 4-8 climate....But hey...I didn't vote for it...
 
If you went the portable heater route would the space be considered unconditioned? If so what ever mechanicals (duct work) would have to be insulated and tested would they not?

Yes, unconditioned if there is no "permanent" heat....Possibly...where we normally see it would be finishing a basement, so no new ducts...

Coincidentally, also funny, and showing how dumb the people driving the energy bus are, in 2024 you don't need to do any of the duct stuff when you extend ducts for an alteration..... blanket pass on R403:

R503.1.2​

New heating and cooling systems and ductwork that are part of thealteration shall comply with Section R403 and this section. Alterations to existing heating and cooling systems and ductwork shall comply with this section.

Exception: Where ductwork from an existing heating and cooling system is extended.

R503.1.2.1​

HVAC ductwork newly installed as part of an alteration shall comply with Section R403.
Exception:Where ductwork from an existing heating and cooling system is extended.

Some conflict on leakage, but whatever...
