Shear values for deck screws and drywall screws.

That "expert" on TV, Mike Homes.....but he udes screws for EVERYTHING. I like the one where they screwed a built-up beam together that supports floor joist above. (they looked like 3" Home Depot specials to me) But they used construction adhesive that I'm sure will never dry out and become...

    Unusual patio cover

NO, Don't tear it down!!! There has to be a structural engineer with post and beam experiance somewhere that can figure it out. It would be a shame to lose something like this to your local landfill. Do you know if the timber and planking are redwood?

    Is it lath?

Wow, I haven't seen that stuff around since the 80's. I agree with kevin, I think it was used with the thick three coat systems. Not sure how it would work with one brown, one finish like most folks use today.

    No building codes?

NANNYISM from my perspective: Some review comments I've recenty received for rejected permit applications: " Plans must have an original signature of the DP. No copies or electronic signatures accepted" ummmm......it's like 2011, everything is electronic these days. "Hand changes not allowed...

    No building codes?

"Yes, I'm a parent, single parent at that. My only child is an Eagle Scout and graduated in the top 5 percent of his high school graduating class. Now he's at college working on a triple major. I never had problems with him around windows or huffing. Maybe it was because I was there with him as...

    Bundled Equip. Grounds

Looks like NM connectors to me (cables clamped to the rear of the connectors) Don't know if it's required but one of those plastic bushing ends would be nice on that big connector. Just curious, I'm not an electricain but is twisting all the grounds together a code violation? Common sense...

Moving a barn to a new location

WOW, I want to live in that community, so old sckool. "It takes a village to raise a child"

    No building codes?

The main reason I stop by this site is to become more educated. There are some posts that can fire me up, the kind when I see "big Brother" going too far (Icodes) Or a AHJ, looking to "burn" someone to get their way. (see the pool fence thread) It's really refreshing seeing some of you...

    Wall furnace

I think they left the trash up there to make up for the unsulation they compressed. Scary stuff.

    workmanship?

ICE, you said; "It only comes out in extreme case but sometimes ya just gotta say no. It creates a stir when a "contractor" takes a correction notice to the office and all it says is no. When asked about it, I tell the supervisor that no is the opposite of yes and worse than not quite. Then of...

    Upcoming rafter repair

Let's see... pay two guys for 15 min to snap lines on a floor deck or roof or pay one guy 2 or 3 hours to inspect for and remove misses? Oh, you're in the attic space, don't forget the fall protection. When standing up rock, it takes less than 5 seconds to draw two lines with a tape and...

    Selling one's stamp

I'm not sure it's fair to place all the blame on the DP's. They are doing what they are being told to do. If they don't do what an owner tells them to do, the owner will take his business elsewhere. It's a catch 22. Unlike the AHJ office, The end user, owner, tenant, contractor are all limited...

    I did it my way

Are these yahoo's home owners trying to do there own work or was this work done by a licensed electrician? There is a big differance!

Wow, now that's some craftmenship. Looks like some three pole switches too. Hopefully this gets preserved in some type of museum somewhere.

    Garage / House wall

For a summer job back in high school, (the 80's) I worked as a helper for an electrician that was also an electrical inspector doing large high end homes. When panels were on the garage/house wall we always surface mounted the panel over a sheet of 5/8 rock. We piped everything from the panel...

Grounding and bonding 2 for the price of one

So.... assume a typ. metal bar joist building, why bond the piping system when the metal building that is used to support the sprinkler system is already bonded using metalic hangers every 5 or 6 feet. Even if you don't bond the sprinkler system it will still be part of the bond loop and...

    Indoor shooting range Ventilation?

Thanks cda. Real quick so I don't hijack the thread. I'm a Commercial Contractor, member of ICC, this site seems to be doing better than the ICC boards so here I am. I'm interested in being more eduacated so I have the ammo (pun intended) to fight with building officials! :banghd Found this...

    Indoor shooting range Ventilation?

I can't help with the code stuff but I wanted to share that all indoor ranges I've been to, do not allow lead ammo. Some even require that you can only shoot ammo that is purchased from them.
