    Stacked lumber

It would depend on span and load. If a single 2x6 will handle the load then the second one stacked over it is blocking, it would pass. If the single member cannot take the span and load then they are counting on some contribution from the built up member and have designed a beam. The second...

    Stacked lumber

If a single 2x6 will do the job then they are fine. One 2x6 above another 2x6 does not make a 2x12 structurally unless the joint between members is designed to handle the shear. where maximum bending moment occurs at midspan, maximum shear is at the ends of a simple beam.

Diagonal Bracing: Does it matter later?

It may not be a wall bearing much vertical load but it does take horizontal wind or seismic load. The vertical studs with horizontal sheathing can be racked fairly easily, by forming a triangle with the permanent let in bracing they have locked the frame in place. Think of a horizontal load...

Roofing Job - Like for Like?

Is the original roof over purlins and if so are the new purlins stacked over the old?

"attach a deck" ??? Has anybody seen this?

Dr's Carradine, Bender and Woeste developed most of the information we have been getting on deck construction over the past decade or so. He's one of the people behind the guide most of us use for deck construction. Dr Bender is also at Washington State, in charge of those labs I believe. That...

    trimmer joist

You know how to cut it fine :D It looks like dougfir, it appears to be #2&btr, I see a couple that could be select struc, but the right hand support joist is a #2, look inside the hole. It just misses at a simple uniform load. Pencil it out finer and it might pass. It won't fail but it should...

    Nail shear strength values

It is certainly good to to keep working towards understanding whats holding things up. These are some more related links that came to mind. APA's website has their "Wood University", the tab is to the lower right on this page: http://www.apawood.org/ There is a good section on connections...

    Rocket Mass Heater

Generally cob builders, the stoves I've seen on the net were cob and have a few years on them. A mass stove is sure an improvement on a fireplace. I like the soapstone or site built brick ones myself. I'm glad I don't have to find the approval point.

    Nail shear strength values

The awc connections calculator gives NDS numbers and might be a little more ignorant resistant than the tables :) http://awc.org/calculators/index.html

    Garage door header space

I wouldn't say that off the cuff. When a joist or beam exceeds a breadth to depth ratio we require blocking or bridging, lateral restraint, to prevent rotation or lateral displacement. This is touched on in R502.7 for floors but the reference and thinking comes from the NDS, section 4.4.1...

    Garage door header space

The problem with a cripple wall of any height on top of a beam, like in Francis' picture, is that the beam under load is not laterally restrained. If the beam is up tight to the floor diaphragm it cannot buckle out of plane. With a cripple wall between the beam top and the load above the beam...

    Finger-joint lumber for rafters

I think the closest is my sister called me obtuse one time. Even I didn't know I could pitch that good :) Thanks for that link tmurray, that looks good.

    Finger-joint lumber for rafters

Glue comes from horses :) These are thermosetting rather than thermoplastic adhesives, have undergone their own set of review, yada yada, it's not a horse worth beating. If they really fail disproportionately I think somebody will be the first to point to the slew of articles.

Gregg, quite right, thanks for the correction.

    Manufacturing of alcholhol based fuels

Hold on, you'll go blind if you drink methanol... wood alcohol. Ethanol, grain alcohol is what is fermented and distilled. It is taken up to 200 proof, pure, and then mixed with 90% gasoline. E85 is 85% petrol. Unless it is on a large scale you will go broke trying to use moonshine for auto...

30% reduction to Southern Pine Span Charts

The purpose of this note is to share some lumber design information and ask for your help with our next Virginia Tech short course program. If you haven’t already read about it, the agencies that write rules for lumber grading and publish allowable design stresses are currently evaluating...

    R317.1.3 2012

The key portion is "protected by a roof". I've seen the argument successfully made that the porch floor does not then need to be durable. Check the moisture content... this doesn't "hold water" :D No delams, decay problems on any that didn't have a leak. My barn porches are still bright and...

    Advanced Framing Methods?

About '72, "mod 24" tried it and decided it was indeed cheap construction, never looked back. Energy codes mean absolutely nothing unless they are tied to the size of the beast. You can put lipstick on a hog but it's still a hog. I lean more to heavy timber with sips or wrap and strap before...

    Skim Words

I was rereading a post I made a couple of days agoafter a couple of new replies had been posted. In that post I had mentioned that I had the picture used in the post on picturepail (or another similar site). This morning that word is a link that I didn't embed. No harm done but a little...

Roof frame pics to make you smile

The birdsmouth is not a notch in the sense of this section. Think of it as the end cut on a stud. However once the seat cut slides inboard off the top plate that bears its' tension edge, the underhanging section, measured perdendicular to grain, becomes the unsupported notch. If there is a tail...

Roof frame pics to make you smile

It does not appear to be overnotched by code. Code also allows a joist to be notched up to 25% of depth to sit on a ledger. Notching like this in a material that is weak in tension perpendicular to grain is asking for trouble though. This is another sketch I had on photobucket. It is an...

    Another Habitalbe Attic Question

Parsing this out... If I pop out a dormer it is a story. When does a skylight become an eyebrow become a dormer. vertical walls other than the gable ends? Hmm, I can gambrel them. This is reminiscent of the mansard roofs' evolution for tax avoidance. I cannot exceed 8' at the gabled end wall...

    Nasty storm+No power+Heat wave=NOT GOOD

The third storm took our power out Sunday at noon, we just got back on. Many thanks to the crews that have worked non stop. The winds hit about 85 mph, design here is 90 below the SWR elevations and exposures so it was close. Many more trees have come down with lots of widowmakers hanging. The...
