    2021 IRC Insulation requirements

How is everyone dealing with the requirements for insulation when it comes to the R value of 20 + 5ci in the stud cavity. Adding that 5ci is putting a big cost on construction. If you use rock wool at 5.5" it is just R-23

    Cabin loft ceiling height

Redeyedfly is a building inspectors nightmare. Call a pig a cow but it is still a pig. You can call it anything you want and the inspector isn't supposed to call you a liar but they know darn well you are going to be having people sleeping up there.

    Piling foundation

Concrete piles are not feasible in muskeg. Steel piles are common practice for sheds porches and decks around here. It is just that a dwelling is being proposed , albeit a small one. It can easily be calculated the load bearing of each pile with the specs on what piece of equipment is pushing...

    Piling foundation

We have a majority of residential construction using piling foundations. Bearing depth usually varies between 6-10 feet below grade. Mainly creosote piling varying between 6 and 12 inches in diameter driven into muskeg until piling meets refusal. With the scarcity of creosote many have been...

One-third of the space will still remain part of the main house but they want a door between the units. The ceiling-floor rating will be met as well as the separation 1 hr. wall. Question is the...

    Graspable handrail continuity

So you have a 2" x 1" piece of stainless tube for a cap rail on stairs. Vertical supports are 2" x 2" tube stainless welded to the cap with a foot plate welded to the bottom and bolted to the tread. The vertical supports would be flush with the inside and the outside of the cap. Is that sill...

    Birds Mouth

I dont like strips either because they always seem to split when trying to fasten.. In the stage its at here I will have a bevel and also have a Simpson beam/rafter tie on each rafter. I don't know why one wouldn't cut birds mouth into rafter also unless they don't know how.

A beveled strip on the beam would get you the required bearing

    Birds Mouth

I like the per se comment. I just couldn't find anything saying it has to be there but don't know why you wouldn't put one on the rafter. For download bearing it is the best way to transfer the load. A bevel strip albeit something doesn't transfer the load the same way. Just dealing with someone...

    House wrap

I agree with steveray Well the problem solved itself this time. The owner/builder is going to re-wrap the house this summer and side it. He is going to use that textured type wrap this time so it breathes behind the siding.

    House wrap

Thanks for the reply. I have seen those numbers but it doesn't give much teeth to tell someone they have to re wrap their whole house. DuPont won't come right out and say that after this said time they will no longer stand behind their product. So it comes down to the AHJ determining whether the...

    House wrap

What is the rule of someone that leaves Tyvek house wrap on their house for two years before they put their finish siding on? I know it breaks down after so much time exposed to UV rays. At what point does it become totally ineffective?

    Joist solid blocking

That is how I see it Thanks all. I still encourage people with larger spans to block. As was said Best Practice and not minimum standard. Makes for less bounce to the ounce.

Rock wool insulation as fire block

I am looking at R302.1.1.1(2012) and to me it appears you can. They are using rock wool or Roxul a lot here in Alaska now. It is dense and friction fits wonderfully. It does not slip in the wall or floor cavity at all. Bugger to cut but is quite effective and has sound deadening qualities also...
