Need detail of protection between the ceiling/floor (open web joist) in a 2x4 wood framed 1 hour exterior wall. Is there a max. - min. air space between the gypsum and inside of the sheathing?

Thanks in advance

You need to check with the open web joist manufacturer for any tested assemblies he has.

Here are some links that may be helpful

UL - http://database.ul.com/cgi-bin/XYV/template/LISEXT/1FRAME/showpage.html?&name=BXUV.GuideInfo&ccnshorttitle=Fire+Resistance+Ratings+-+ANSI/UL+263&objid=1074327030&cfgid=1073741824&version=versionless&parent_id=1073984818&sequence=1

and some sheet rock companies they have tested assemblies using various construction types.

Hope this helps you find what you need.

http://www.cgcinc.com/home.asp?nav=72&mkt=30&bc=5.72 The above would take you to a page where you select the title "Fire-Resistant Assemblies SA100" and click on the PDF icon. Scroll throught the PDF to the Floor/Ceilings to the Wood Framed Section and keep going untill you see the drawing of a assembly that is yours.
Guess I'll have to take the time to read through them, could not find the detail. I once had this detail saved showing the gypsum between the non-rated ceiling and floor space on the interior side of an exterior wall <5 feet from the lot line for 5B construction. Of course the gypsum goes on before the I-joist but what about 2x's joist?

Where at the insulation phase for a 'Habitat for Humanity' 4 dwelling unit project and the 'volunteered' architect is not at all familiar fire rated construction.
