1008.1.4.4 Security grilles.

In Groups B, F, M and S, horizontal sliding or vertical security grilles are permitted at the main exit and shall be openable from the inside without the use of a key or special knowledge or effort during periods that the space is occupied. The grilles shall remain secured in the full-open position during the period of occupancy by the general public. Where two or more means of egress are required, not more than one-half of the exits or exit access doorways shall be equipped with horizontal sliding or vertical security grilles.

4,000 sq ft sprinkled M occupancy 2 exits required

Manually operated Security grilles are installed on the main and second exit. Thumb turn on the egress side, Keyed on the other. There are also 3' 0" panic hardware doors withe code compliant electronic controlled locks.

Security grilles are manually operated and will remain open when the building is occupied (so says the manager)

The last sentence that states no more than half of the exits can have security grilles is the issue

Would you allow manually operated security grilles on both exit doors? Do you have a code section to support your decision?

Ok lost how many marked exits are there?

How many exits are required?

This section really functions as an exception to several sections, including Sections 1008.1.2 (Door swing) and 1008.1.9.3 (Locks and latches) and permits the use of these security grilles under conditions that are similar to those found in Section 402 for covered mall buildings. These security grilles will be open when the space is occupied and will, therefore, not obstruct any egress path.

2 exits required. 2 exits provided

If the 3'0" panic doors fulfilled the required egress requirements......maybe....other than that no..
The security grilles are installed in addition to and in front of the egress doors

The only difference is the doors manually role up 10 feet and require a hook bar to close them

No if only two exits, no matter width are provided

Code says ;;

. Where two or more means of egress are required, not more than one-half of the exits or exit access doorways shall be equipped with horizontal sliding or vertical security grill

That is a big negative ghost rider, the pattern is full....I have never had one that wanted to do it on the back door as well....Very secure stock room yes, but no gate over the back door...And they are missing their braille exit sign...

Have to agree with the majority here... only one of the two required exits may be permitted to have the grill.

Just got back from the final on this store. It is a new design and larger then all the others. Over 3 million in inventory and none of the product is cabled to the fixtures. They are concerned about smash and grabs after hours since the store is a double exposure with the front entrance from the shopping complex and the rear with major highway exposure. Smash and grabs are not something that happens here.

Employees enter through the rear with a swipe card that starts their time sheet so the gate should always be open when employees are in the store. We are going to allow the two pull down gates under a conditional CO. If they violate the condition then we will make them remove the one over the second exit.
