In Massachusetts (amendments) under 9th edition code, 2015 IBC. Have a small wood framed type VB multi family R-2 designed rental apartment bldg with primarily flat roof, with (2) small hip roof areas to for visual/design interest only. 1- Thought there was an exception to not require access to these spaces if no source of ignition present. 2. Table 903.2 seems to state in an R4 occupancy, only a heat detector only required for attic not used for living, storage, or fuel fired equipment. Seems like this was placed in a strange place of the footnotes to table 903.2, and excludes this allowance from R2. Thoughts?
I dont want access to these small spaces, and don't want sprink coverage to these spaces, but could accept the latter, really dont want the former.
Thoughts???

Depends on which sprinkler installation standard you are using: NFPA 13 or NFPA 13R.

NFPA 13R does not require sprinklers in concealed spaces; however, NFPA 13 does require sprinklers in combustible concealed spaces, unless some of the exceptions listed in Section 9.2.1 apply.
