Sorry if this is already been posted.
Context: a pre-engineered metal building warehouse, type II-A construction, S-2 occupancy
My question is about Table 601, footnote b, which says "...fire protection of structural members in roof construction shall not be required, including protection of primary structural frame members, roof framing and decking where every part of the roof construction is 20 feet or more above any floor immediately below."
Does this include the entire primary structural frame? i.e., the vertical frames supporting the roof frames & purlins?
If so, doesn't this effectively say that a type II-A "primary structural frame" doesn't need a fire-resistance rating if the roof frames are 20 feet above the floor?
Thanks in advance.

No, only the members that are above the 20-foot height are allowed to be unprotected.

Ah, makes sense. So, the vertical cut-off for fire protection is 20'? i.e., I can stop the fire protection on the vertical frames & intermediate columns at 20'? or, since they technically break the 20' plane, the entire section of vertical frame & column would need to be protected?

The entire column must be protected per IBC Section 704.2, including the connections to the horizontal members of the roof's primary structural frame.

Ok, thanks. Not worth it, going to II-B. Thanks for the help though, this is a nice resource to have for solo architects like myself.
