Exterior Wall 2-Hour fire-resistance rating required per Table 602.
Fire separation distance less than 10 feet – required to be rated for exposure to fire from both sides.
We are evaluating exterior precast concrete wall assemblies to meet the 2-hour rating with exposure from both sides. A 6” precast wall achieves the 2-hour rating from both sides on its own. We need to insulate the wall, and would like to use spray foam insulation on the interior face of the precast concrete panels. We would then use metal studs with gypsum board to finish the interior space and provide the required Thermal Barrier per section 2603.5.2.
Does this wall still achieve the 2-hour requirement from both the interior and exterior? My hope is that the 6” precast concrete can be considered the rated exterior wall and the spray on the interior is irrelevant.
Not exactly sure how to interpret section 2603.5.1.
Can anyone provide any clarification?
