Admittedly I am not good with formulas and this one has me looped. I have an existing S-1, V-B building that the owner wants to convert to an M occupancy. The existing building is 5000 SF and 16 feet in ceiling height. How does the formula work and how do you calculate building height since 503 is based on stories, not feet in height? Can anyone help a confused inspector?

To add to this question, I came up with 3.33 for the building area and 1.92 for the building height and it just does not seem correct to me.

Coug Dad - Saw that after I submitted the post. More evidence of my mind going south for the winter.

MtLog - currently under 2003 edition with some state amendments, none of which impact this chapter.

If you are individually evaluating mixed occupancies, it appears that the credit to not consider the building height is based on the height of the fire area, not simply the ceiling height. Therefore, it would seem that the measurement should at least extend to the top of the fire barrier bounding the fire area, which may be higher than the ceiling. Further, where the fire-resistance of the roof/ceiling assembly forms a boundary of the fire area, it would seem that the entire thickness of that assembly should be included in the evaluation.
