907.3.1.5 Existing Hotel with A-3

This section requires the installation of an alarm system in existing hotels with more than 20 sleeping rooms.

We have a hotel with an attached banquet hall (A-3) with an occupant load of 125.

Would this section require the alarm system to include the A-3 area of the building or only the R-1.

The two occupancies share a common main entrance and exit.

2. A separate fire alarm system is not required in buildings that are equipped throughout with an approved supervised automatic sprinkler system installed in accordance with Section 903.3.1.1 or 903.3.1.2 and having a local alarm to notify all occupants.

What is ment by a "local alarm"?

In house discussions some believe the corridors is all that is required, others say they (visual & sounders) have to be installed in each unit.

I read it to say that a manual fire alarm system shall be installed in existing Group R-1 occupancies (4603.6.5, 4603.6.5.1). It does not say "throughout the building containing Group R-1" or something to that effect. Therefore, the installation may be limited to the occupancy as prescribed by code.

If applicable, 4603.6.5.1.1, specifically references smoke detector system installation only in corridors serving Group R-1 sleeping rooms, which could be considered to extend to all corridors providing means of egress from the sleeping rooms (not just the corridor immediately outside the sleeping room doors). But, this should still not require system installation in other hotel rooms or spaces, even if utilized by hotel guests.

So you have a building with say a two hour wall separating it into two buildings and businesses, but kind of related to each other and more than likely have doors open between them

One has a/v's throughout and the other has none

Fire in the side of the one with a/v's, people running out of that side and The people on other side are just setting there eatting thier steak and potatoes. Because of no a/v's!!!
