A Poll To The Veterans

As a veteran, I often hear the "We Support the Troops,

or Support the Veterans" or some combination of this.

It is my experience that most veterans do not expect or

want any recognition for their service.....It is also my

experience that if you do not ask, ...you do not receive!

Recently, I was shopping at O`Reilly's Auto Store and half

kiddingly / half seriously, ...I casually asked the cashier

if they offered some type of military / veterans discount.

To my surprise, ...the cashier said "Yes!....That they did in

fact have a discount on purchases."......The cashier

applied the discount [ albeit a small one ], but a discount

nonetheless!....I have also noticed that some vehicle

manufacturers are offering a military discount.

QUESTION: As an Armed Forces veteran, do you

ask for any type of discounts, or have you asked about

any type of discounts, ...on any type of purchase ( i.e. -

dining, ...vehicles, ...financing, ...mortgages, ...credit

cards, other ? )

As usual, this is not any type of scientific poll!......I am

only curious to see what other veterans are doing out

there.

FWIW, there is mortgage lending institution in my area

that is offering mortgage rates at 3.95% for 20, 25 &

30 yr. mortgages, and 3.75% for 5, 10 & 15 yr.

mortgages, ...just for Honorably Discharged veterans,

in this state only!

I can't think of ever asking about one, but if I were aware of one, wouldn't turn it down either.

Home Depot/Lowes will do it. They make a big deal out of it on Veteran's day but both will carry it through the year.

And yes, I don't even like being thanked for my service. Creates an uncomfortable situation.

I did hear once a great response, but I think the guy was trying to be an ***.

I don't ask. Reasons are my own. I will say this in a very loud and clear voice: When applying for a V.A. home loan the "Veterans Adminstration" can take their $5,000.00 "loan origenation fee" and ... Well... if you have been there you know where this is headed. How sad that Home Depot is more grayious than the supposed country we have served? End of rant.

I, like fatboy, don't ask for one, but I won't turn one down either. I truly do not expect thanks or recognition for my service. I served because of a sense of duty for my country in her time time of need and would do it over again.

I feel yore pain!....As a member of your / our Forum family, IMO, you are

welcome to vent / rant / spew / hack / hurl / raze / or anything else you

want to.......Sometimes it DOES help to just blow off your frustrations.



I too would go back and serve in a heartbeat, ...if I could just turn

back that darned time clock. D`OH !!

Rarely do I ask for a discount, but when I stay at a hotel I do ask because they usually have a military or veterans discount.

I also use VA Loans and due to a small disability, I do not have to pay the loan origination fee.

I don't ask either mostly because I don't think to; I'm proud to have served (and retired). I guess I'd rather pay full price in the current economy rather than save 10% (keep those retail numbers up)!

Just curious here, but "if" you were to go to a vehicle dealership

to purchase a vehicle and they had some type of a veterans

discount available, you would not take advantage of that savings?



I am not trying to disrespect anyone in this topic, so please do

not be offended......Again, I am simply wanting to see what other

veterans are doing.

I too do not seek to obtain any favors or recognition for my

service, ...but at the same time, I do not see anything wrong

with being prudent, practical and utilizing discounts when they

are available.

As I said, I wouldn't turn anything down anything that was offered, just wouldn't necessarilly seek it out. Although, now saying that, when we are actually visiting my son, wherever he may be, I do use him and the visit to ask if the have a military discount. hmmm, interesting how somehow I differentiate.

I would use the discount if it is well publicized. I tend to do business more often with local businesses that support our armed service members. Serving your country is a huge honor and privilege. That's why I served. To this day I see those years as the years that most defined who I am today. Not college or any certifications. The military taught me so many values and life lessons. Which is why I wish every one should serve in some way if they are able.
