I have a client that is wanting to place a play structure inside a building. I'm trying to determine if the structure they're purchasing complies with the 2010 ADAS / 2022 California Building Code Chapter 11B. This is new to me - I've never worked on or inspected a play structure before. I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the requirements for "Elevated Play Components".
Per ADAS / CBC 11B-240.2.2, at least 50% of elevated play components need to be on an accessible route. Okay, great. However, I've never seen a play structure that provided an accessible path of travel (I assume a ramp) to the elevated portions of the structure in person. I know they exist - a quick Google search will show plenty. I'm just trying to determine if one is actually required.
To keep things simple, let's say the structure has three slides from an elevated platform and three climbers from the ground level to the elevated platform. Six total elevated play components per the USDOJ advisory on this, three of which (the climbers) can be accessed from an accessible route on the ground level. There's no accessible route to the elevated platform - only stairs. Would this comply with code?
