Course Description

■This course will focus on California accessibility and Federal ADA requirements pertaining to existing buildings. The material is presented in three parts, combining an overview of up-to-date regulatory requirements with hands-on activities:

Part I: General Code Framework for Working With Existing Buildings

1.Understanding code adoption tables as they relate to existing buildings

2.Important definitions relevant to existing building accessibility

3.Additions, alterations, repairs, change of use and occupancy

Part II: Common Accessibility Requirements That Arise in Existing Buildings

1.2010 CBC and the 2010 ADA technical requirements pertaining to parking, exterior paths, interior paths, stairs, elevators, restrooms, drinking fountains and signage

2.Application of the CBC and ADA to historical buildings

Part III: Practicum and Discussion - Theoretical Case Studies

1.Case Study 1: How to apply code adoption tables for an existing high-rise hotel

2.Case Study 2: Change of occupancy and alterations in non-historical existing building

3.Case Study 3: Partial change of occupancy in historical building without major life safety concerns

4.Case Study 4: Total change of occupancy in historical building deemed to have life safety issues

Presenter Bio

■Nate Wittasek, PE, LEED AP is a senior managing engineer at Exponent, Inc. in Los Angeles, California where he leads the West Coast codes fire protection engineering practice. Nate brings a practical approach to the design and forensics community that reflects his diverse training and experiences in academia, structural design, sustainable design, fire science, and the fire service. He is a proactive participant seeking solutions to both the technical and people-related needs of any given project. Through the use of state-of-the-art engineering tools, scientific principals set amidst a background of in-depth knowledge of regulatory requirements, Nate is able to effectively identify and address key technical challenges. Nate is a LEED Accredited Professional and a Professional Engineer. He is involved nationally with the AIA, NFPA, SFPE and the CTBUH. He is an instructor at the UCLA Extension, adjunct at Cal Poly Pomona, and has been teaching accessibility for the AIA in Los Angeles for the past few years.

Location

■AIA Los Angeles Chapter Office at the Wiltern Center, 3780 Wilshire Boulevard, Suite 800, Los Angeles, CA 90010 (corner of Western/Wilshire). Parking is available for $10 at the Ralphs/Wiltern Structure or on surrounding side streets, but be sure to read all posted parking signs. Please note that AIA|LA, Ralphs, and the Wiltern do not offer validation for parking. If you park in the Ralphs/Wiltern Structure, park on the third floor or higher and do not park in the spots indicated for Ralphs customers only as you run the risk of being towed.

Cancellation/Refund Policy & Disclaimers

■Cancellations made at least one week prior to the class will be refunded in full, less a $10 cancellation and processing fee. No refunds for cancellations will be given after that time. No refunds shall be issued for no-shows to the class. Registration may be transferred to another individual. AIA|LA reserves the right to cancel any class where the minimum number of pre-registration registrants is not met. If such a cancellation occurs, registrants will be notified and given the opportunity to select an alternate and comparable class to attend. In the event such an alternate and comparable class is not available, then the registration fees will be refunded as appropriate. Further, dates, times, classes, program subject matter, instructors, panelists and fees are subject to change, without notice, at any time at the sole and absolute discretion of AIA|LA.
