Table 602
f. For special requirements for Group S aircraft hangars, see Section 412.3.1.

412.3.1 Exterior walls.
Exterior walls located less than 30 feet (9144 mm) from lot lines or a public way shall have a fire-resistance rating not less than 2 hours.

City owned airport with no established interior lot lines. Privately owned hangers are allowed to be built on city leased airport property. The leased property is the footprint of the hanger no adjoining property

Question
New hanger is proposed 20 foot from existing hanger, both are IIB construction.
1. Is the intent of the code section to have 60 feet between the two non-rated exterior walls?
2. or rate the new hanger exterior wall and just have a 30 foot separation assuming a lot line at the 2 hour rated exterior wall?

I think # 2 is the correct intent of the code. However, I can see it being argued both ways and having to move a building 10 ft. is an easier sell to the Airport manager than 40 feet.

[BF] FIRE SEPARATION DISTANCE. The distance measured from the building face to one of the following:

1. The closest interior lot line.

2. To the centerline of a street, an alley or public way.

3. To an imaginary line between two buildings on the lot.

The distance shall be measured at right angles from the face of the wall.
