Alarm system in lieu of hard wired smokes/co

R314.2 permits NFPA 72 installations for Single-Family Residences; looks outright permitted to me. Enforcing the provision that it be maintained and monitored by an approved supervising station may be a bit of a chore, but I know jurisdictions that have a process for ensuring annual lawn sprinkler backflow prevention inspections occur - so, seems like there could be a similar process for annual inspection for connection to an approved supervising station.

I agree the system is allowed in lieu of but has the same caveat as non monitored hard wired systems, there is no requirements for maintenance or verification that they function after inspection an CO is issued.

What interpretation is there?

Install a fire alarm system or intsall smoke detectors with audible notification. It gives the contractor or homeowner a choice

R314.2 Smoke detection systems.

Household fire alarm systems installed in accordance with NFPA 72 that include smoke alarms, or a combination of smoke detector and audible notification device installed as required by this section for smoke alarms, shall be permitted.

Our stance:

Yes, you can have a low voltage alarms system, However:

1) The owner must own the equipment, no lease from an alarm company

2) The system must be monitored by an approved agency and we get that proof in writing

3) The system installation must be compliant with NFPA 72 so we want 24 hour backup battery

4) The C of O will state the above in a more legal way

5) I am sure there is something else but I can't think of it right now
