So I’m on the safety Committee at work and a question was brought up, if a desk and chairs can be in an MCC for operators to do minimal paperwork like signing on to work permits etc...
there is actually plenty of room to be at a safe working distance, and there is an empty corner in the MCC that is about 30’ by 30’ give or take. I’ve looked and my E&I supervisor has looked at the NEC and we can’t find anything that says they can’t be there. I’ve asked a state electrical inspector and he says there is nothing in the code book. I emailed ASK OSHA and they said there is nothing that says they can’t be there. Does anyone know if there is a building code that says there can’t be an office in an MCC, or where I can find a code that states what an MCC can or cannot be used for? Any guidance or direction would be awesome!

K Murd,

Welcome to The Building Codes Forum !

For clarity to all, what are your applicable construction codes ?
Do you have an Existing Building Code in Place ?......Property
Maintenance Code, etc. ?.......Is the MCC provided with conditioned
air [ supply & return ] ?.......By definition, the MCC is not a
habitable space.

Are there plans to make the MCC a habitable room ?
