April 5th, 2012 » Accessibility Standards: “The Basics”

Whether you follow the 2010 ADA Standard or the Architectural Barriers Act Standard, the application of the “building block” provisions contained in Chapter 3 are critical in designing accessible elements and spaces. These provisions provide criteria for ground and floor surfaces, turning spaces, clear floor and ground spaces, knee and toe clearances, protruding objects, reach ranges, and operable parts. This session will review how to apply these criteria and provide guidance on some common errors in design.

Things I learned today:

-Minimum clear floor space of 30x48 is for unconfined or unobstructed spaces, and that there are increased clear floor spaces for confined or obstructed spaces, such as in alcoves.

-Permitted overlaps for T-shaped turning spaces may only overlap a maximum of 12 inches and only in 1 arm of the T-shape. (might have just forgot)

-Closed fist rule for operable parts is a good design rule, but not mandatory under standards.

-fixed items are covered by both the standards and regulations, non-fixed items are not typically covered by the standards, primarily by regulations only.

-Reach ranges for a 25 inch maximum side reach have specific usability reach zones, which typically begin 12 inches from the rear of the clear floor space and extend forward until 24 inches from the front of clear floor space, from which it is limited in a 24" depth, arcing from the back of maximum reach range to zero inches at the front of the clear floor space. e.g., a counter that ends against a wall.

-protruding objects apply to all areas of circulation, not just accessible routes (e.g. stairs).
