I am with sales for Fire Shield. Recently we have had multiple projects across the country call us after failing inspection. The common industry practice of a "5 sided drywall" method requires EJ's and increased cost on labor and material. More inspectors are cracking down on this not being a viable solution. Has anyone ran into this issue on job sites? Our product is UL tested and listed and is the only system available that is approved for back-to-back configurations. Thank you for your input!

I don't see a non-compliant issue with this system.

714.4.1.2 Through-penetration firestop system.
Through penetrations shall be protected by an approved penetration firestop system installed as tested in accordance with ASTM E814 or UL 1479, with a minimum positive pressure differential of 0.01 inch (2.49 Pa) of water and shall have an F rating of not less than the required fire-resistance rating of the wall penetrated.

I phrased this incorrectly. I mean people are failing that are not using the Barri-Ring and have had to order from us halfway through a job to get the correct requirements.

We don't typically see back to back plumbing in a single wall fire rate assembly in what is built here. So it has not been an issue with plumbing shower head installation.
Great catch by the inspectors that are requiring corrections.

Welcome to the forum! Please consider becoming a sponsor.

I had this exact problem on a student housing project back in 2004: back-to-back tub/shower valves.
We had to create a custom fire stopping detail and then get a review from a renowned fire protection engineer.
The product you’ve shown could be helpful on many projects.

I should point out that since that time in 2004, many of our bathrooms in publicly funded projects need to meet ADA, and the position of the toilet grab bars often configures the bathtub valves away from a back-to-back condition.

Can you provide a link to the UL website for their listed assembly that is cited in your literature, W-L-7325?
When I do a search on UL, your product does not show up.

They are creating a membrane penetration in a firewall with their five sided box, which needs to be protected with a listed system per 714.4.2 of the IBC, and the five-sided box is not a listed system that I have ever found, and no one has verified that it is compatible for all of the different wall systems it is installed in.

If a contractor can't show me their listed wall assembly and a listed membrane penetration system that works with that wall, I would not accept it.

Not been an issue. Almost always see a double wall assembly anymore given the required STC ratings (IBC 1206).
