Here is what I have: In the bastment of a building the owner has a tenant wanting to open up a hooka bar, which is an A occ however, the space looks like it will have a occ load less than 50 which turns it into a B occ. My questions is now that it turns into a B will they still have to intall a sprinkler system in the basement just like an A occ because the basement dose not have a exit door directly to the outside, you will have to go up a set of stairs then to the outside.

I have been looking into the code and I can not find anywhere that states they will have to install a sprinkler system.

Thanks for the help.

A-2 Restaurant sprinkler requirement usually kicks in a 99+ occupant load in the IBC2006 the IBC 2003 use to be 300. But if under 50 occupants, code allows it to be a "B" occupancy like you stated. There are other issues to consider in regards to exiting I would think!

I'm not a bar hopper, what is a hooka bar?

If I'm in a wheelchair, how do I get to this bar? Is there a pole to slide down from above?

Openings shall be located in each 50 linear feet (15 240 mm), or fraction thereof, of exterior wall in the story on at least one side. The required openings shall be distributed such that the lineal distance between adjacent openings does not exceed 50 feet (15 240 mm).

2. Openings entirely above the adjoining ground level totaling at least 20 square feet (1.86 m2) in each 50 linear feet (15 240 mm), or fraction thereof, of exterior wall in the story on at least one side. Thanks for your posts but the contractor came in today and now they are going to use the whole space so there will be no question they will have to install a fire sprinkler system.
