You are confusing a ridge beam with a ridge board. With a structural ridge beam there are only vertical forces on the rafter.

All I am thinking was that this was a very small project and is it really that difficult to cut a couple birds mouths into the 6-10 rafters?

The use of that image of the beveled strip is kaka IMHO.

Wrong nomenclature....

Collar ties resist uplift and are located near the peak of the roof.

Rafter ties resist lateral thrust and are located lower, typically forming the horizontal ceiling framing.
