Welcome!

Go to definitions...........

[BG] AREA, BUILDING. The area included within surrounding exterior walls , or exterior walls and fire walls , exclusive of vent shafts and courts . Areas of the building not provided with surrounding walls shall be included in the building area if such areas are included within the horizontal projection of the roof or floor above.

Hello,
My second post.
For purposes of calculating Building Area for the IBC Table 506.2 What if a commercial building has a separate canopy (roof separate from the main building roof but attached to and supported by the building wall) over an entrance? Would we include that "stoop" area in the Building Area?
Any help or thoughts appreciated.

Just to clarify - the question was specifically about a residential building (presumably IRC-governed) and I believe this definition is from IBC Chapter 2.

IRC 2021 doesn't have a direct equivalent that I can see, and I'm dealing with this same issue. The only semi-related defined term is "Gross Area of Exterior Walls", but it's not exactly what I'm looking for.

When IRC is lacking, is it normally accepted to borrow from IBC (is it a 'referenced standard' per 102.4)?
