Part of the not so fun part of being a contractor is the responsibility for existing conditions. Unless there is a technical infeasibility to resolving a problem, the contractor pretty well bought it when he/she took the job.

I'll argue to a point with a contractor then take then right to my supervisor... I explain my position and let them explain theirs.. once my boss makes a decision (whether or not I like it, but I can be pretty persuasive), I document it and move on. Once you ask them to sign that they are taking responsibility, they usually come around.
