1009.8 Spiral stairways.

Spiral stairways are permitted to be used as a component in the means of egress only within dwelling units or from a space not more than 250 square feet (23 m2) in area and serving not more than five occupants, or from galleries, catwalks and gridirons in accordance with Section 1015.6 (Stages)

How big is this deck? If only one means of egress is required, the spiral stair may be allowed.

Best answer.. That depends - I can have a spiral stairway as long as the tread depth measure a minimum of 11 inches@ 12 inches from center of rotation, provide a minimum of 36" clear, and the tread depth never gets below 10 inches minimum..... In other words, a really BIG spiral stairway.....Not teh one depicte din the drawing

If your two required means of egress is not dependant on the spiral staircase or the spiral staircase is a third option, then everything is okay - provided that the spiral staircase meets the minimum requirements mentioned above (treads, risers, width... IBC 1009.8). A slippery slide would also work well to get from the deck to the area below.

I agree, but if you DO use the slippery slope in this instance, you are likely to end up in the fire pit.
