How come I remember I got a plan check comment saying accessible routes to accessible toilet compartment need to be 60" in lieu of 44", can anyone let me know which code section state that?

I'm pretty sure 60" isn't a minimum requirement for the accessible route. Neither is 44" a minimum requirement for a route.

36" (reduced to 32" on occasion) is the minimum for accessibility purposes. See ADAS § 403 / CBC 11B-403 or ICC A117.1 § 403. (I assume this is a CA project, so any code reference further would be CBC specific).

The only way I see it needing to be anything wider than 36" is to comply with door maneuvering clearances per CBC 11B-404.2. In that case, door sing and approach determines the minimum width. There's also 11B-604.8.1.2 which can increase the maneuvering clearance depth for the compartment door depending on the orientation.

Edit: For a specific project, maybe 60" is the minimum. The door swings out, meaning you have a 36" door with an 18" maneuvering space, ± a few inches at the end for the hinges, and you're getting close to 60". Me saying 36" is the minimum is just a general statement. Project specifics can change this.

CBC 11B-403.5.1 exception #5:
The clear width for accessible routes to accessible toilet compartments shall be 44 inches (1118 mm) except for door-opening widths and door swings.

My question is specifcally asking for the situation of the clear width for accessible routes to accessible toilet compartments.

It is for a CA project, California building code 2022 .

That's what my dyslexic ass gets for not reading the exceptions and answering quickly... My bad.

The only way I see a 60" wide route to an accessible toilet compartment being required is to accommodate the door maneuvering clearances. That would be 11B-404.2.4.1, figures (a), (d), or (h) (see Table 11B-404.2.4.1). It gets you close to needing 60". I know of no other code requirement that would push the clear width above 44".

I found the plan check comments. You are right, that was to accommodate the door maneuvering clearances.

That project has a out-swing partition door encroached into the accessible route.
